WHO WE ARE
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) in Guyana is part of a global initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the UNDP. It provides financial and technical support to civil society organisations (CSOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and community-based organisations (CBOs) to address environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development and community empowerment.
The GEF SGP emphasises locally driven solutions to global environmental challenges by empowering communities, particularly vulnerable and marginalised groups, to protect the environment while improving their socio-economic well-being.
ABOUT SGP GUYANA
SGP Guyana was launched in April 2013 as part of the SGP Global initiative, which seeks to empower civil society and community-based organisations to protect the environment while improving local livelihoods. Implemented under the UNDP, SGP Guyana provides grant funding and technical support to grassroots groups working to address some of the country’s most pressing environmental challenges.
Over the past decade, SGP Guyana has supported more than 40 community-driven projects across all ten administrative regions. These initiatives span a wide range of GEF focal areas, including biodiversity conservation, climate change, land degradation, sustainable forest management and capacity building. Each project reflects the programme’s core belief that meaningful environmental change begins at the community level.
Throughout its development, SGP Guyana has championed several innovative approaches that have strengthened community resilience and environmental stewardship. These include community-led eco-tourism models that showcase Guyana’s rich biodiversity while generating sustainable livelihoods; renewable energy solutions, such as solar installations in remote villages, which improve energy access and reduce emissions; and agroecology and sustainable farming practices that restore degraded lands, improve food security, and help combat climate change.
The programme has also supported women- and youth-led environmental enterprises, advancing social inclusion while delivering measurable environmental benefits, as well as partnerships with Indigenous communities that combine traditional knowledge with modern conservation techniques.
Today, SGP Guyana continues to nurture innovation, strengthen local capacity, and foster long-term environmental impact, ensuring that communities remain at the centre of sustainable development.
